Safety Instructions and Rules

  • All customers and participants of any kind (including coaches) should wear closed toed shoes while throwing axes.

  • Customers should only enter the lanes when invited by an axe throwing coach.

    • No throwing should be allowed until a coach has delivered the safety speech and proper throwing technique.

  • Throw together, retrieve together.

    • Axes should only be collected once both players in the lane have thrown their axe and the axes have stopped moving (i.e.. embedded in board or come to a stop on the floor).

  • When holding an axe (or other object to be thrown), every participant within the immediate vicinity should ALWAYS be on high alert and fully aware of the holder’s intetions.

    • The blade edge of any object should NEVER be touched with bare skin, regardless of how dull the object appears to be by observation.

    • Axes should always be held by the handle.

    • Customers should NEVER touch the axe head.

  • Axe blades should never be directed at a person, animal, or anything other than standard wooden targets.

    • Gesturing or ‘playing around’ with the axe is prohibited.

    • There should never be another person (or life) between a thrower and the target.

  • i.e., NEVER hold a board (or any other object) in the vicinity, near, in front of, or around the target, while allowing or instructing another participant to throw any other object (axe or otherwise) toward the target or the board/object (described above).

  • NEVER throw axes toward, around, above in the vicinity of any individual.

Safety is paramount to being a successful coach.

  • Good technique and proper form should always be used.

  • Throwing without proper technique can be, and likely will be dangerous to you and other participants.

  • Axes or sharp objects in flight should NEVER be attempted to be caught while in motion and should only retrieved when the axe or sharp object has stopped moving.

  • Never attempt to catch a moving axe or sharp object while it is in motion, in any direction.

  • Establish a neutral zone for axes and instruct everyone, including coaches, to place axes in the designated axe holder after use or between people.

    • Do not allow guests to hand each other axes. Have each participant to set the axe down in a neutral zone or designated axe holder.

    • Sheaths or blade covers should remain on the axe unless it is being thrown or stored in a neutral zone.

    • Axes should be stored with blades facing down when in a designated box, or blades facing away from throwers if hung from hooks/magnets.

  • Axes should NEVER be thrown at a target when there is already an axe or axes embedded in the target.

    • If an axe (or any other object) is thrown at the target while another object is already embedded in the target (or any area surrounding the target), it can cause damage or bounce back of the thrown object and create a hazardous situation or even fatality.
